Food Project

Ardwick, Manchester

A City of Trees Project

Following the recent trend of growing your own food, we started working with schools and communities in Ardwick to show them how it’s done.

We started with three schools and called on local people to join in and help. Not only did we teach them how to grow fresh produce, but we also showed them how to cook the food. At St Luke’s, Medlock and Plymouth Grove primary schools, we ran food tasting and apple pressing sessions with pupils to show them what could be done with the food they grew.

The children decided which fruits were planted in their school. They chose from apples, pears, cherries and plums. After that we provided them with all the equipment they would need, seeds, raised bed and more advice about growing their own food. Nearby residents were also given all the same items so they could be included in these activities.
